Why your Intention matters more than your Goals

Jan 07, 2024

Happy New Year, ladies! As we step into the fresh pages of 2024, it's time to talk about setting intentions for the year. But first, let’s understand the difference between intentions and goals, and how a shift in perspective can profoundly impact our journey towards fulfilling our deepest desires.

Understanding Intentions vs. Goals

Goals are specific, external achievements we strive to reach. They are the milestones we set in our careers, personal life, health, and other areas. Goals are often measurable and time-bound, like running a marathon, achieving a promotion, or traveling to a new country.

Intentions, on the other hand, are more about the journey than the destination. They are the inner values and principles that guide our actions. Intentions relate to the way we want to feel, the attitudes we wish to cultivate, and the personal attributes we aspire to develop.

A Personal Example: From Finding a Man to Experiencing Self-Love

Let me share a personal story to illustrate the power of setting intentions. Like many, I had a goal of finding a man and experiencing a love life filled with romance. However, I found myself repeatedly in relationships with men who were hesitant to commit, often leading to heartbreak.

The turning point came when I realized that my intention needed to focus on me, not on what the man would bring into my life. I set an intention to experience love that would honor my self-acceptance and self-love. Instead of seeking a man, I attracted a love coach who helped me identify ways in which I wasn't loving myself.

As I started working on self-love, something incredible happened. The right man came into my life - not because I was searching for him, but because I was creating a space of love and respect for myself. My journey turned from seeking love externally to nurturing it within, which ultimately attracted the kind of relationship I had always desired.

Creating a Vision for the Year

  • Reflect on Your Core Values: Start by contemplating what truly matters to you. Is it creativity, connection, peace, or adventure? Your intentions should resonate with your core values.
  • Envision How You Want to Feel: Think about how you want to feel throughout the year. Do you want to feel empowered, peaceful, loved, or joyful? Let these desired feelings guide your intentions.
  • Set Broad, Flexible Intentions: Instead of rigid goals, set fluid intentions. For example, “I intend to embrace opportunities for growth and learning,” or “I intend to cultivate joy in daily activities.”
  • Align Actions with Intentions: Once you’ve set your intentions, align your goals, actions and decisions with them. This alignment will bring more fulfillment and purpose to your daily life.

Conclusion

As we kick start this year, let’s focus on setting intentions that are rooted in our true selves. Remember, it’s not just about achieving goals; it’s about living in a way that aligns with our deepest values and brings us joy and fulfillment. Let 2024 be the year we create a vision for our lives that starts from within and radiates outwards.

Here’s to a year of meaningful intentions and transformative journeys!
